Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using these treatments must be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to starting mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," described one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
