Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a armed takeover in last fall and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the former leader's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his son.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's decision was the possibility of the former president's transfer to embassies near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to request asylum through a embassy office", a declaration said.

The court filing emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative US President Trump, leading him to implement a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will have a imprisonment assessment on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that the former president be allowed to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was determined responsible of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate his opponent and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the military leaders. His successor was took office without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, many his backers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the national capital, Brasília.

The police stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
