Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like standard biological terror, but within Together resides a deep contemplation about how we choose to love one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
