Why the DNC Has Concealed its Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: The Inside Story.

This action by the DNC to block the release of its internal autopsy report concerning the 2024 election appears stunning yet entirely predictable. Opposed to frank assessments, the party's leadership apparatus operates closer to a communications shop rather than a political organization committed to building a volunteer base for winning elections.

A Culture Resistant to Internal Critique

Unwilling to depart from the prevailing attitude of conformity, the DNC has stayed within that legacy all through this past year. Making public an official autopsy might have shown whether party leaders actually want to foster honest conversation about the strategic failures which allowed the former president to win re-election. However, the committee is acting as if there is little to glean from the stunning loss of 2024.

The top priority: does this help us win? If the answer is no, it’s a distraction from the core mission," a justification reportedly given to justify concealing the document.

Critical Problems a Report Could Have Examined

A genuine analysis worth its salt would not dodge key points of failure. This encompasses:

  • Electoral Disengagement: Losing of a significant portion of the electorate who voted for the party's candidate in 2020 was decisive in the close recent race.
  • The Decision to Run: The unwavering choice by a party leader to run again, alongside a very late exit, is seen by some as denying the party's base the chance for a genuine choice.
  • Failing Everyday Americans: While facing inflation, the campaign allegedly ceding to elite contributors while failing to challenge the role of big business.
  • A Gaza Effect: The failure to adjust a stance concerning a major international conflict is cited as alienating many voters, especially among young people, Arab-Americans, and Muslim Americans.
  • Losing Young Voter Support: Extensive evidence shows a significant decline in Democratic support from the youth electorate.

A Record of Evasion

Choosing secrecy fits a recurring tendency of sidestepping difficult realities. This mirrors an episode where virtually every Democratic officeholder in Washington supported a sitting president's decision for seeking another term right up until a catastrophic campaign event forced a reversal.

Meanwhile, large majorities of Democratic voters had been continually telling researchers of their opposition to that candidate to seek re-election.

Financial Concerns

A substantive report could investigate matters regarding financial allocations, such as what sums went to party strategists and media firms over the course of a campaign that managed to spend a colossal war chest over a few months.

A Larger Implication

Ultimately, the secrecy regarding the analysis is symptomatic of an allegiance toward the existing power structure who engineered an unsuccessful presidential campaign. The message for rank-and-file members – including millions of loyal volunteers – is that they cannot have a right to see what the leadership say they discovered based on hundreds of interviews drawing from conversations with insiders.

A party incapable to publicly examine its own failings is unlikely to break free from the pattern that proved so beneficial to the rival party.
